HOW TO START PLAYING SOME EASY GUITAR RIFFS
Want to start learning easy guitar riffs? Everyone loves playing riffs on the guitar. This lesson explains what they are, how to play them and gives examples for you to practice.
NOW THAT YOU HAVE SOME CHORDS UNDER YOUR FINGERS!
By now, you should be doing pretty well in both understanding and knowing a range of useful chords. Now Gary is going to move his attention to playing some easy guitar riffs. Guitar riffs in simple terms are a collection of notes that are played underneath a song, or other chords. Some of the time the riff will also be played by the bass player and or keyboard player. It’s the main structure that the melody and chords and counter lines are built over.
ARE RIFFS REALLY HARD TO PLAY?
This is a question that comes up many times. To be honest, this question can put some people off before they start.
The main thing to keep in mind is that the material that Gary will introduce you to in this lesson has been deliberately created to be simple to play. Do not think that these riffs don’t have any application to the real world. These ideas are in the mainstream of many of the best known guitar riff ideas played around the world.
WHAT SHOULD I PRACTICE – RIFFS OR CHORDS
Try and divide your time up between both areas. If you want to play in a band or back yourself singing, you’ll need to be fluent in both of these disciplines. Keep working away and always listen to the bands you love. By doing this you will see how much they use both of these musical techniques.
As always, you should check out our Guitar Books For Sale which offers books which give great ideas about riffs, chords and licks. Also, check out our How To Play Guitar page which outlines all the other courses that we currently have on the GMI website.
