HOW TO GO ABOUT PLAYING MELODIES IN SEVERAL KEYS
Being able to play a song in one key is great, as we mentioned in the text within lesson one. What we need, however, the ability to play the same melody in many keys. This really takes us to the next level as a player. So how do we go about playing melodies in several keys? The first thing would be to ensure that you really know your the five Open String Scales In Five Keys (major).
Once you know these scales then the fun can begin. You will be learning a song specifically written by Ross to help you achieve the above goal. The song is called “Heading Home” and you will be referring to this song throughout Ross’s course.
THINK OF SCALES AS TOOLS TO BE USED TO CREATE MUSIC
We are not going to learn the song in all five major keys you learned, just three. This will, however, serve as a really good example on exactly how the process works. We also want you to get away from thinking that scales are an end unto themselves. Scales are tools to be used to create music; in this case a melody. Just as if you were learning to use tools that a joiner would use like a hammer and saw. If you taught someone how to use these tools, but never went on to show how they can be used to build things, well what would be the point. This point is exactly the same when we consider music and is the reason your learning Heading Home.
Now go and watch Ross’s video lesson and learn Heading Home for yourself. Make sure you take the time to learn the song in all three keys, then continue and learn it in the other two potential keys. In the next lesson we will be applying Right Hand Rhythm Patterns to the chords that make up the song.
